Exploring Spirituality in Therapy: Connecting with Your Inner Spark

Recently, I had the privilege of sitting with a group of final-year psychotherapy students. During our discussion, the topic of spirituality emerged after one student—deeply moved by a client’s emotionally charged session—asked how to stay connected with empathy while protecting herself from being overwhelmed.

We explored the idea of creating energetic “rings of protection,” but she hesitated. “I’m not spiritual,” she admitted. This sparked a deeper conversation about what spirituality truly means and how it manifests in both therapy and everyday life—even for those who don’t consider themselves “spiritual.”

What Is Spirituality?

For me, spirituality isn’t about religion or doctrine. It’s something far simpler yet profoundly powerful. It’s that “little spark” within all of us—the driving force that compels someone to seek help when life feels heavy, to reach out even when they’re unsure what they’re reaching for. It’s the quiet, intuitive voice that says, “I want more. I deserve more.” That is their spirit.

Spirituality is the “more than”—the subtle, often unnoticed energy that surrounds and guides us when we tune in. It’s not about rigid beliefs but about listening to the intelligence of our hearts.

Finding Your Inner Light

  • What lights you up?

  • What brings you joy?

  • What do you truly love?

These questions tap into the heart’s intelligence, which is, at its core, a profound form of spirituality.

For many, the concept of spirituality has been entangled with the rigidity of religion. But true spirituality isn’t about rules—it’s about reconnecting with the part of us that deeply knows what we need, what makes our hearts sing, and what gives life meaning.

Pause & Reflect: Your Spiritual Connection

Take a moment to reflect:

  • What does spirituality mean to you?

  • What sparks your inner light?

  • How can you honour that quiet wisdom in your daily life?

Whether you consider yourself spiritual or not, this deeper connection can bring clarity, resilience, and a sense of purpose—key elements in both personal growth and therapy.
