The Key to Resilience in Business (Without Burnout!)
Building Resilience as a Business Owner
Resilience is essential for anyone running their own business, leading a project, or pursuing a creative endeavour. But resilience doesn’t mean staying strong all the time—it’s about understanding that, just like life, business has its peaks and troughs. The key is learning how to navigate the lows without getting stuck in them.
I recently spoke with a client who was feeling frustrated about how slow business had been. She questioned whether she had made the right decision in pursuing entrepreneurship, expressing regret and doubt. I listened and gave her space to vent. The next morning, I noticed her on Instagram Live, passionately sharing insights about her work. It was a reminder of how quickly we can shift our energy once we acknowledge our struggles. Expressing frustrations—rather than bottling them up—can be a powerful way to reset and move forward. However, if we find ourselves stuck in negativity, that’s when seeking outside support can be invaluable.
Practical Ways to Build Resilience
1. Recognise Your Progress
When business slows down, it can feel disheartening—but quiet periods offer a chance to work on the business, not just in it. Instead of feeling stagnant, consider:
Writing a blog or newsletter to reconnect with your audience.
Planning or refining materials for a new workshop or service.
Reaching out to colleagues on LinkedIn or social media—virtual or in-person coffee chats are never wasted time.
Reflecting on past achievements. Taking small, consistent steps adds up, and looking back helps you see just how far you’ve come.
2. Build a Strong Support Network
Entrepreneurship can feel isolating at times, so it’s important to know who your trusted supporters are—whether a mentor, coach, close friend, or professional network. Having people to turn to can make all the difference in staying motivated.
3. Let Off Steam (and Then Let It Go!)
There’s real power in acknowledging your frustrations. Talking them out, journaling, or simply allowing yourself to feel disappointed can help you release stuck emotions. Often, once we express how we feel, we gain renewed energy to move forward.
4. Find the Lightness—Humour Helps
Laughter is one of the best tools for resilience. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and remind you not to take everything so seriously. Business is important, but it doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time.
5. Embrace Vulnerability—Strength Isn’t About Always Being Strong
True resilience isn’t about pushing through at all costs—it’s about allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, to rest when needed, and to come back stronger. When we acknowledge our limits, we prevent burnout and build a more sustainable way of working.
